You will take your Salmon and Trout primarily from the Waitaki River.
The Waitaki is a major South Island river with a huge catchment
area which gives its name to the North Otago region along whose northerly
boundary with Waimate it flows, on its way from its source at Lake Benmore to
its mouth 110 km away on the east coast. The settlement of Waitaki is on the
southern side of the river mouth, 22 km north-east of Oamaru. The catchment area
is one of the most valuable hydro-electric power resources in
NZ
You may also take Trout from Lake Benmore (the largest man-made lake
in NZ - 79 km²) and Lake Aviemore, both on the border of South Canterbury and
North Otago
Salmon may be fished all year (each season licence starts October 1),
seasons are divided into winter and summer. The best time to fish is from
November through to the end of March
The Season for Trout runs from October to the end of April.
A Licence is required for both these fish, please see details here
